Went to the Soho Bar so we could get some wifi as our hotel for the first night didn't have any. It was a Sunday night adn reasonably quiet but the staff were polite and quick with drinks beware that drinks in Malaysia are expensive as it's Muslim, something I should have thought of beforehand!
Anyway the place was what you would expect of your typical themed pub and was air conditioned and of course had free wifi which made the drink prices about bearable. We didn't eat anything while we were there but the meals we saw coming out looked decent enough if not just your basic type pub food. Looked like there were a few locals who emet up there to play pool and all in all it wasn't a bad place to spend a few hours while in Georgetown.
Whenever I'm in Penang and always seem to spend more time in Soho then I do anywhere else. The staff are friendly and chatty, the drinks are reasonably priced the spirits are, anyway, beer is about the same price as in the UK. There's a pool table and you can sit outside. For me, that's perfect. The music is a bit hit and miss - it depends if you're upstairs or downstairs. Upstairs used to be really popular a few years ago but now it's really, really quiet because of all the other places on the island outside of Georgetown that the expats go to drink.
The food is quite appalling, by the way - best avoided. With that said, if you're looking for a place to sit down and drink til you can't drink any more, you've found it in Soho. Once inside the atmosphere is genuine pub and the contrast from the food stalls just outside is profane. There a quite a few beer varieties on tap and also a cider. The prices are decent.
The happy hour prices on beers was actually not bad at all - especially considering that the happy hour prices are valid all day The food is pub food but a good break from the curries and noodle soups dominating the food supply in George Town. Shortly, a nice place to go for a short break from Malaysia. Just got a drink there. Garlic bread was terrible: too much butter, too much garlic, not enough toasted.
